In the summer of 2009 the students of Fleming College’s 2009 Sustainable Building Design and Construction program, completed the construction of the Camp Kawartha Environment Centre designed by Our Cool Blue Architects. This innovative centre will be hosting environmental programming from Kindergarten to grade 4 students from the region and as an educational centre showcasing sustainable living to the community. The centre includes features such as:
“geothermal heating and cooling, radiant floors, solar hot water, living roof with local plants, solar panels, net-zero energy design, pre-fabricated and built on site straw bale walls, rain water collection system, wetland water purification system, passive solar design, straw bale – hempcrete and rammed earth construction insulation, the only thatch roof in Ontario from locally harvested grasses and cordwood benches.”
